TEVVA AND ZF HAVE PARTNERED TO DEVELOP BRAKING SYSTEM THAT IS FOUR TIMES MORE EFFICIENT

Tevva, a British company that specializes in developing electric trucks, has joined forces with ZF and developed an electric braking system that is up to four times more efficient.

ZF Commercial Vehicle Solutions is the world’s largest supplier to the commercial vehicle industry and, specializing in providing solutions for vehicle motion control, integrated safety, automated driving and electric mobility, worked together with Tevva to adapt its electric braking system to the Tevva 7.5 t.

The system developed by Tevva together with ZF, can recover up to four times more energy than the traditional braking system.

To obtain ZF’s approval, Tevva engineers had to work to successfully meet the company’s stringent test criteria.

This newly adapted system has already gone through the testing phase at ZF’s test track, located in Jeversen, Germany, and involved diverse conditions, inclines and different surface types.

Heiko Eggers, ZF’s Head of Commercial Vehicle Application Engineering EMEA for Braking and ADAS, said: «Our broad product portfolio, including ZF’s regularized Electronic Braking System, enables faster time to market for new and innovative market players like Tevva.

«The commitment and engineering expertise allowed us to meet our stringent safety requirements and complete our project. We look forward to seeing the first Tevva trucks on the road».

Even with the electric braking system, the conventional braking system is still needed to bring the truck to a complete stop, but this double layer of safety is an excellent aid to more efficient driving. This also means that the hardware has less effort to extend the life of the braking system in the long term.

Uzair Jilani, engineer for drive and brake systems at Tevva, added: «We have worked hard to secure the support of one of the most important suppliers worldwide. Working with ZF is a crucial step in the momentum we are building as a truck manufacturer.

«The system has been adapted for use with our regen system, when the brake pedal is depressed, much of the “braking” is done by the regen, which means the driving system slows the vehicle down».

The Tevva 7.5t is a battery electric vehicle (BEV) with a 105 kWh battery pack, and mass production has already begun this year at the company’s London facility, which will be followed by the 7.5 Hydrogen Electric Truck.

The hydrogen-powered electric truck boasts a better range, up to 570 kilometers, while Tevva’s BEV offers only up to 227 kilometers, making it the ideal means of transport for urban distribution fleets.
